The Whirlpool WP52085-28 defrost thermostat was designed solely for Whirlpool and other brands of refrigerators. It acts as a safety switch while on the defrost cycle, keeping the refrigerator from overheating throughout the automated defrosting process. It works as during regular operation, the refrigerator maintains a chilly temperature. When ice builds on the evaporator coils, a timer initiates the defrost cycle. The defrost thermostat monitors an increasing temperature as the frost melts and turns off the heating element once a safe level is accomplished. This prevents the refrigerator from getting too warm, which could harm food. Once the temperature falls back to a lower point, the defrost thermostat immediately adjusts and the defrost cycle finishes.
