When you close the refrigerator door, this tiny pad on the inside of the door makes contact with the door switch. Upon pressing the switch, a mechanism inside the switch completes an electrical circuit. This is how it operates: The door switch pad presses against the door switch when the refrigerator door is closed, completing the circuit. This signal instructs the refrigerator to begin cooling and turning on the interior light. On the other hand, the circuit remains unfinished when the door is open since the pad isn't pressing on the switch.
